Remote turret for rapid deployment
Monday, 20 September, 2010
BAE Systems Land Systems South Africa (Stand 6C26) has unveiled its latest Self-Defence Remotely Operated Weapon (SD-ROW) turret, which is designed for installation on a wide range of platforms, from tactical support vehicles to armoured personnel carriers and mine-protected vehicles.
The SD-ROW can be installed or removed from a vehicle within 30 minutes and is attached to the roof via three bolts. The turret weighs only 65kg when fitted with a 7.62mm machine gun provided with 200 rounds of ready-use ammunition. When fitted with this weapon, effective range is quoted as 600m, but it can also be fitted with other weapons such as a 5.56mm machine gun. Turret traverse is all electric through 135° left and right, with weapon elevation from -20° to +80°.
The weapon can be rapidly laid onto the target by the operator under complete armour protection, and if required, can be dismounted for ground use.
The human machine interface consists of a conventional display and a hand controller similar to a games console, which in a typical vehicle application allows the SD-ROW to be operated by the driver or passenger depending on tactical situation.
As the weapon is fully stabilised, targets can be engaged with a high level of accuracy while the platform is stationary or moving.
Optronics consist of a CCD day camera with a 5° and 22° field-of-view, which has a detection range of 1,200m for dismounted personnel, recognition range of 450m for dismounted personnel and identification range of 200m for dismounted personnel. There is also a spotlight for night operations.
Development of the SD-ROW is almost complete and it is already being marketed for existing and new-build vehicle applications.
